STATIST

A compact, portable program that provides most basic statistical capabilities: data manipulation (recoding, transforming, selecting), descriptive stats (including histograms, box&whisker plots), correlation & regression, and the common significance tests (chi-square, t-test, etc.). Written in C (source available); runs on Unix/Linux, Windows, Mac, among others.

Information and communication technologies and geographic concentration of manufacturing industries: Evidence from China

by Hong, Junjie

Fu, Shine

Using the 2004 China economic census database, this paper examines the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on the geographic concentration of manufacturing industries, controlling for other determinants of industrial agglomeration. Higher geographic concentration is found consistently in industries where ICT are more widely adopted, and the association is stronger at higher geographic levels. Furthermore, young firms that have adopted ICT, although they are more footloose, contribute to industrial agglomeration. High-tech industries with advanced ICT also tend to agglomerate. Contrary to the prevalent argument that ICT lead to more dispersion, our study suggests that ICT promote industrial agglomeration.

Some Policy Issues on Open Source and Proprietary Software

Graziella Marzi

Software industry is a fast growing sector of the economy which is undergoing significant changes both for the presence of the open source mode of production and for the challenges of globalization and convergence with other industries. This paper analyses the role of open source software (OSS) on competition and innovation in the software industry and debates the economic rationales for promoting the adoption of OSS by national and local governments.

Gnu Regression, Econometrics and Time-series Library ( GRETL)

Description

Is a cross-platform software package for econometric analysis, written in the C programming language. It is is free, open-source software. You may redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) as published by the Free Software Foundation.

Features

  • Easy intuitive interface (now in French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, German and Portuguese as well as English)

  • A wide variety of estimators: least squares, maximum likelihood, GMM; single-equation and system methods

  • Time series methods: ARMA, GARCH, VARs and VECMs, unit-root and cointegration tests, etc.

  • Output models as LaTeX files, in tabular or equation format

  • Integrated scripting language: enter commands either via the gui or via script

  • Command loop structure for Monte Carlo simulations and iterative estimation procedures

  • GUI controller for fine-tuning Gnuplot graphs

  • Link to GNU R for further data analysis

Data formats

Reads own format XML data files, Comma Separated Values files, Excel and Gnumeric worksheets, Stata .dta files, Eviews workfiles, JMulTi data files, own format binary databases (allowing mixed data frequencies and series lengths) RATS 4 databases and PC-Give databases. Includes a sample US macro database. See also the gretl data page.

 Download

Gretl for MS Windows can be found here, and gretl for Mac OS X here.

Manual

The gretl manual comes in two PDF files, a User’s Guide and a Command Reference. English versions of these, formatted for U.S. letter-size paper, are included in the gretl source package and binary distributions. Gretl will access the other available versions — namely English (A4 paper), Italian and Spanish — on demand, via the Internet. You can also find the manual files here.

EasyReg International

EasyReg (Easy Regression) conducts various econometric estimation and testing tasks on all 32bit Windows platforms (95 through Vista), simply by clicking the mouse. This software is created by Herman J. Bierens of Pennsylvania State University.

EasyReg is designed for use in empirical research, and for teaching econometrics. In the latter case the user can choose his or her own econometrics level.

What does EasyReg do?

EasyReg does most of the econometrics tasks available in competing commercial software, in particular:

and even more. Some of the listed software have additional features, though. EasyReg is mainly a point-and-click program, whereas some of the listed commercial software packages (in particular RATS and TSP) are programmable.

Data size limitations

All arrays in EasyReg are declared with variable dimensions. However, the number of observations is stored in an integer variable, which in Visual Basic 5 is limited to a maximum value of 32767. Consequently, if you try to import a data set with more than 32767 observations you will get an error message, and EasyReg will crash. On the other hand, such large data sets are rare in empirical econometrics. Therefore, in practice the amount of data that EasyReg can handle depends on the memory capacity of your computer.

Bargaining and Markets

Bargaining and markets by Martin J. Osborne and Ariel Rubinstein was published in 1990 by Academic Press, now a division of Elsevier. It presents the modern strategic theory of bargaining and describes, in a consistent framework, several applications of this theory to the study of markets. It uses a small number of models to illustrate the key points in the theories and offers detailed proofs of all results.

With permission from Elsevier, the full text of the book (with errors corrected and references updated) is freely available. It is available in two formats. In one format, each page of the book appears on one letter size page (27.9 cm by 21.6 cm). In the second format, each page of the book appears on a smaller page, 20.3 cm high by 12.7 cm wide. The second format has the advantage that the margins are much narrower, so that (a) when a page of the file is displayed on a screen, the text fills most of the screen and (b) when the file is printed using the Adobe Acrobat Reader and the option “Expand small pages to paper size” is chosen, the text fills most of each printed page.
